There are thousands of Vietnamese smokers who are residing in California today. An estimated 440,000 people in the United States die each year from smoking-related causes. While these deaths largely occur in adults over age 35, evidence has shown that smoking behaviors primarily begin in childhood. (American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 27(2): 118-125, August 2004). Every year, tobacco use kills more Americans prematurely than AIDS, alcohol, car crashes, murder, suicide, and illicit drug use combined. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1998). Also, the statistic of second-hand smoking related deaths associated with cardiovascular diseases yearly is approximately 53,000. Whether you are smoking or inhaling the smoke from someone else, the dangerous effects are similar; it may cause cancer to the mouth, larynx, esophagus, pancreas, kidney, uterus, bladder, etc….Although many smokers are aware of the negative health risks relating to tobacco, not everyone can quit smoking easily. In fact, only 5% quit successfully on the first attempt. Also, among people who are reluctant to quit smoking, 40% to 50% have successfully quit with other stop smoking programs and support. Which group do you want to be in: free from tobacco or unable to quit?
