Mental illnesses occur more often than many people realize. Mental illness affects all age groups and all ethnicities. When left untreated mental illness can lead to unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, incarceration, and suicide. The costs associated with mental illness total more than 100 billion dollars a year in the U.S. (National Alliance for Mental Illness).
According to the most recent statistics for Orange County Asian Pacific Islanders (API) make up of 15 % of the population, however only 2.53% of this population have accessed any of the County’s mental health services. This statistic demonstrates that there is still a great need to outreach, engage and educate the API populations on the different mental health issues and services available to them.
To increase mental health utilization, Nhan Hoa Clinic has been working in collaboration with Korean Community Services (KCS) and Orange County Asian Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA) to establish the API Outreach & Engagement Program. Our collaborative relationships allow us to provide a full scope of mental health services to the API communities. Our partners, KCS and OCAPICA, have language capacities of Korean, Tagalog, Chinese, Samoan, and other API languages, while Nhan Hoa Outreach & Engagement Program focuses on the Vietnamese community. All of these programs are funded by the Orange County Health Care Agency Mental Health Services Act, Proposition 63.
